Powering data buoys using wave energy: a review of possibilities

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Data buoys are a widespread method of not only monitoring environmental parameters, but have range other applications: from surveillance to providing power for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The majority data currently in use either solely powered by batteries, or they employ an array solar panels sporadically top up the battery when conditions suitable. Less usual is wind power—though some successful hybrids two, such as AXYS Technologies WindSentinel, also exist. As wave technology matures, advancements this underdeveloped could allow option using energy converters (WECs) alternative renewable source. provide small-scale application WECs where many issues with harvesting stochastic and irregular source would be highlighted. lessons learned developing wave-powered potentially applied larger, more costly applications farms megawatt-level generators. This review considers buoy projects development—particularly those that look incorporate mechanism their primary secondary source, prospects, both end-use own right, low-cost platforms prove emerging larger-scale use.

A review of wave-energy extraction

Comparing ocean-wave energy with its origin, wind energy, the former is more persistent and spatially concentrated. In this paper wave spectrum parameters related to transport, distribution and variability of wave energy in the sea are educed. Many different types of wave-energy converters, of various categories, have been proposed. It is useful to think of primary conversion of wave energy by ...

Experimental Evaluation of IRWEC1, a Novel Offshore Wave Energy Converter

This paper describes the innovative offshore point-absorber wave energy converter (WEC), IRWEC1, under development by the Hydrodynamics, Acoustics and Marine propulsion Group at Babol Noshirvani University of Technology. Totally enclosed in an outer shell, with no external moving parts, IRWEC1 is completely sealed which make it a robust and trustable system. Important motion for this WEC is the...
